paradoxical politics?

One of my hobbies includes taking pictures of funny, obscure, and downright odd bumper stickers. It never ceases to amaze me the kinds of incriminatingly moronic statements people decide to make on the outside of their vehicles.

Here’s another one I just dug up in the disgustingly disorganized ‘myphotos’ file.  This is the epitome of a minivan mom gone mad.  Instead of investing in a car alarm, she got this.  Brilliant!

ladylikeness

My Mom used to always tell me to act “ladylike”. She eventually gave up.
I took this photo in my brother’s old Chicago apartment. This magnet prose was left on the fridge by the previous tenants of the apartment. They were female, by the way.

there’s no such thing as a platonic breakup

It’s pretty atypical for me not to title my blog entry the same as the title of the poem I’m posting. I like to pretend I’m a pretty atypical person.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Ferraro for reading my blog. Thanks Professor Ferraro.

Self-satisfactory loathing
by marie gordon

This is it for me
At my desk writing
Sipping cran-vodkas
Story of my life

This is my beloved
On another screen
And behind my screen
No, she never was mine

Screens do not commit
They can in writing
They don’t in person
They scatter me out

Until her hair turns gray
And her eyes drop out
Until her body’s limp
I touch but don’t feel

We have extended
Into the abyss
It has parted us
Always, already

This is my typed heart
It never did type
I never did cry
For her through the keys

And these aren’t my words
You won’t hear them said
She won’t call them hers
They never were ours

This is our world, love
Where our love is man’s
And our hands are theirs
Their eyes inside us

I’m telling you now
Throwing in the towel
Before it’s taken
Slightly defeatist

A steady decline
From love to chaos
Or chaos to pain
Or pain to relief

Say it like you will
There is hate and love
The two are the same
We have broken us

Apart and together
If you don’t come back
At least I’ll have that
To write about

too good to be true

While normally i tend to keep this site pretty “literary-friendly”, this picture is too good to be true and i’m making an exception. yes, college is a shit-show (not just duke). Nevertheless what is shitty is thus occasionally beautiful as well in its own right.  By the way, I didn’t take this picture, JD did.

my devil’s paintbucket

by marie gordon

It was my night
In the devil’s den
It was my night
To breathe sweet air

Our dresses swayed
Reds and blacks twirled
Giggling ‘neath green eyes
Was it our night

The colors swirl
Wrapping consciences
Tearing siGn down
Off sparkly walls

Sin isn’t black
Not red, no more
Who said devils sin
Only people

When colors mixed
The darkness glowed
Under green eyes
Our treachery swooned
